New 34.5kV HiPerGuard UPS: Direct Grid Connection Cuts AI Data Center Power Costs

News Desk

Electrification News – ABB launched the HiPerGuard 34.5kV, a new medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply enabling AI data centers to connect directly to the grid at 34.5kV. This eliminates voltage conversion losses, simplifies infrastructure, and cuts costs while maintaining high reliability. Operating at 98% efficiency, it can save approximately $880,000 annually per 1% gain in a 100 MW facility through reduced losses and less cabling.

The microgrid-ready architecture flexibly integrates battery energy storage (BESS), renewables, and gas generation for peak shaving, frequency regulation, and resilience. Its compact design reduces footprint by 20-25%, supporting parallel configurations up to 25 MW for scalable expansion. HiPerGuard earned the first UL 9540 certification of its kind for energy storage safety.

Sebastien Surply, Critical Power Leader, highlighted its role in meeting AI’s demanding power needs with flexibility and efficiency. Available for order in summer 2026, it supports global deployments and positions ABB at the forefront of powering the AI revolution.
